Novocell has established a human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based model of stem cell transformation. Malignant tumors are thought to be intiated by transformation of normal tissue stem cells to cancer stem cells (CSC). The mechanisms responsible for this oncogenic transformation are not well understood and the biological properties of CSC are not adequately defined. A detailed understanding of CSC and their unique characteristics is essential for the development of preventive and/or therapeutic treatments for cancer.
